Dear Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking Club Member,
For those new to this newsletter it is published FORNIGHTLY usually on a Tuesday, so keep this one as a reference until the next newsletter appears which will be on Tuesday 5th June. I try and list 2-3 weeks worth of walks so you can plan your diaries.
Rather than give all the individual links to book walks and courses with me (which is a real labour of love) I’ll give you the main link to my website below from which you can scroll down and across the pages, then select the ones you want by clicking on the book now button. I’ll only highlight some key feature walks with their links in this newsletter so make sure you check my website for all the walks I offer.
All my walks and courses can be found and booked by clicking on the link below. I’ve now listed full walk details of all walks up to 9th June – CLICK on the link below.
LATEST NEWS (there are lots of pictures on the Facebook Page too!)
Well this week marks 1 YEAR since I started Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking! Thank you to everyone who has come on courses and walks with me over the last 12 months. I’ve met so many lovely people and made new friendships whilst building the walking groups. I hope you feel you’ve benefited too from discovering Nordic Walking. Here’s to the next 12 months of building fitness, fun and friendship….. I’ve a lot of ideas in the planning for new venues and activities. And let’s hope the weather continues as sunny, dry and fine! We need a perfect summer!
If you’ve not been for a while on a regular walk since gaining your Freedom Passport or have been pondering whether to book that Learn to Nordic Walk course then now’s the perfect time to do it!
Congratulations to Rimpy, our latest NWUK Freedom Passport recipient! Hope to see you Nordic Walking with us again soon. Also welcome to Jennifer and Sandra who are about to complete their course tomorrow.
There have been numerous gorgeous walks over the last two weeks. The Thursday Strollers have enjoyed 2 mile gentle pace walks at Clifton Country Park and last week along the Bridgewater Canal at Worsley, taking a peek at the work underway at the new RHS Bridgewater Garden on the opposite bank before basking in the sunshine at the Barton Arms! Besides our regular Saturday 9.30am Workout Walks at Clifton Country Park, Adventure Walks have included the Greater Manchester Walking Festival walk at Dukes Drive, Monton, the Tuesday evening stroller in Didsbury at Fletcher Moss (ending with a visit to the Didsbury Pub!), Lunch and a 3 mile walk at Heaton Park, and a faster pace 4 mile walk around a new route at Lightoaks and Buile Hill Parks last Friday, which included plenty of hill inclines. Last Sunday 14 of us enjoyed a glorious 6 mile Rivington Rendezvous walk through the Lower Rivington Estate at Horwich, Bolton then up to the top of the Pike via fields of lambs and stunning views before returning down through the terraced gardens, via an icecream van, through woodland then navigating 100’s of bikers gathered at the upper barn before getting back to the Great Barn for lunch! Whew! For those of you who’d like to visit the Rivington Estate on a less strenous walk then the Friday Freedom walk on the 8th of June is for you! See below for more details.
Don’t forget to follow the Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking page on Facebook or @PPNordicWalkUK on Twitter (if you’re into social media… ) and please share the posts rather than just ‘like’ them as this way more people to see them. Here’s the link to the Facebook page.
If there is anywhere you could display one of my A4 posters please let me know. Thank you for your help.
COMING UP/ THINGS TO NOTE
NEW LOCATIONS AND COURSE FORMAT for Learn to Nordic Walk courses.
I’ve become increasingly aware that for many people it’s hard to commit to 4 consecutive weeks of lessons given busy lives especially at weekends, although for most people (like driving lessons) it’s the best way to learn and practise. As a result I’m trying a new format for the courses.
This Saturday 26th May is the first ‘Learn to Nordic Walk in a Day or over two consecutive Saturdays’ course at Salford’s Clifton Country Park. The choice is down to the individual. Participants either can choose to do 2 x 1.5 hour sessions this Saturday (with a lunch break in between) or do one session this Saturday and the second session the following Saturday. The course price of £30 also includes a 3rd regular Adventure or Workout walk of their choice as their graduation walk which must be taken within 2 weeks of completing session 2. If you’ve not booked your course yet then maybe this is the option for you? Full details and to book are here. If these dates don’t suit you then the next date for this format is Saturday 23rd June.
If these dates don’t suit you then the next date for this format of course at Clifton is Saturday 23rd June.
NEW LEARN TO NORDIC WALK COURSE LOCATION I’m also starting courses up in Horwich, Bolton commencing with a Taster session on Saturday 2nd June and a Fast Track Learn in a one day course the following Saturday 9th June. The meeting point is based around the lovely Curleys Fisheries and Dining Rooms at Wallsuches in Bolton which is perfect for a pre or post walk brew! Tell your Bolton based friends and please help me publicise this new location.
Taster is 2pm on the 2nd June.
Fast Track Learn in a Day starts at 11.30am on the 9th June.
My other upcoming dates and locations for Learn To Nordic Walk courses including the original 4 lesson course format can be found via the http://parksandpathwaysnordicwalking.co.uk/activities/ link.
REGULAR WALK SESSIONS
NEW WORKOUT WALK SESSION ON A MONDAY AT 11AM AT CHORLTON WATER PARK.
I’m changing the format of the Monday session effective from the 4th June to a Moderate Fast Pace 1 hour Workout Walk. This will be based at Chorlton Water Park/Kenworthy Woods unless notified otherwise and will be a session for building fitness, stamina and speed. It will include more drills and interval training. This session will run 3 out of 4 Mondays in each month. This complements the regular Saturday Morning 9.30am Early Bird Workout Walk at Clifton Country Park.
Details of the first session on the 4th June is here.
The next Tuesday Evening Stroll is also at Chorlton Water Park on the 29th May at 6pm.
The Thursday Strollers now start at 11am in the Salford Area. This week its Dukes Drive Monton (24th) with a post walk brew at the Waterside, then Clifton Country Park on the 31st (Unity Brook Inn post walk) and then a new start point of Beesley Green, Roe Green Worsley on the 7th June following the flower trail through Worsley Woods (The Cock Inn post walk). All can be booked via the website.
NEW WALK VENUE. Friday 1st June is when I’ve planned a Friday Freedom ‘Bird’ walk starting at Pennington Flash Country Park in Leigh with a pre walk lunch at the Robin Hood opposite the park entrance. Pennington Flash is one of the North Wests premier sites for bird watching so don’t forget your binoculars! You could even make a day of it by going to Bents, the premier north west garden centre nearby in the morning, before joining us for lunch and then going on the walk! Full details below. If the weather forecast is for sunshine then we could have a picnic lunch at Pennington Flash rather than the Robin Hood – will decide nearer the time!
Don’t forget it’s Sale Water Park this Friday 25th at 1.30pm from the Boathouse
and there is a Bank Holiday Walk at 11am on the 28th at Moses Gate Country Park in Bolton (if the weathers good we will finish with a picnic lunch). This is a really lovely venue with lots of places to visit on the walk.
I mentioned earlier about running a more ‘sedate’ walk at Rivington for those who are not able to participate in the Sunday Specials but would like to visit this lovely location. This walk is now listed for Friday 8th June. It’s worth making that effort, just ask some of the others who’ve been on the Sunday Specials. It will be between 2 and 3 miles at an easy pace, on a mainly flat terrain (no steep inclines). It will start at 1pm so that we have time for a post walk brew at the Great Barn and be away by 3pm before rush hour starts. I can take 4 people in my car so book early to secure your place.
POLE HIRE AND REGULAR WALK CANCELLATION POLICY. Please note that once you have your Freedom Passport if you want to continue to use my poles rather than buy your own there is a £1 hire charge, payable in cash on the day.
Also please note the cancellation policy for Regular Walks. You can cancel online by removing yourself from the walk up to 24 hours before a walk starts but no later, after which no refund is allowed. If you need to cancel nearer to the start time then please just send me a text or ring me so we’re not waiting for you but no refund will be given.
BOOKING LAST MINUTE ONTO WALKS – Remember you can book onto a walk yourself up to 30 minutes before it starts (text me to let me know you’re coming too and to check the walk is going ahead) or if really last minute, ring or text me and let me know you’re coming (and to check the walk is still going ahead) and providing you’ve got a credit balance to cover the cost of the walk on your Exercise- Anywhere account then I can add you myself to the walk after the event and take the payment from your account …. this is a last resort though!
Whilst I hope you will continue to walk regularly with me, don’t forget that your NWUK Freedom Passport allows you to book walks with any NWUK instructor both locally and nationwide. Just visit the Nordic Walking UK Exercise-Anywhere Website to search for walks and click on ‘find a class’ in the toolbar. There are lots of great instructors running walks in the North West. Click on the link below.
Hope to see you on a walk soon
Well done for getting to the end!
