Susan Spain’s Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking News, Manchester, Salford & Didsbury 23rd Jan 2018

Dear Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking Member,

LATEST NEWS. Congratulations to Helen, Peggy and Hannah who received their Freedom Passports this week. Look forward to seeing you on regular walks soon. Also welcome back to Gill who received her Freedom Passport in October but joined our Saturday Morning Workout Walk at Clifton Country Park for the first time. We now have an after walk brew stop at Ryders Farm cafe just along on Manchester Road from the park and a few of us tried it out for the first time (bring change, their card machine sometimes doesn’t work!). The Saturday morning Learn to Nordic Walk Group are now half way through their course and are really getting stuck in. (John all being well you’ll have some more guys to join you on Saturday mornings soon – see the picture). We also enjoyed a rather soggy Adventure walk at Wythenshawe Park on Monday afternoon.

Don’t forget this Friday’s walk is at Heaton Park with a prewalk lunch at the Hidden Gem cafe at the Garden Centre. Lunch from 1.15pm to 2.15pm then walk follows ending at 3.30pm. Link to book is in the regular Adventure walks section below.

Below is a link which some of you have asked me to share which is the article that was published in the Guardian in Sept 2016 which got a lot of people interested in Nordic Walking. Also watch the ONE SHOW on BBC1 on Thursday where my fellow instructor Ian Northcote from Bromsgrove is being interviewed by Julia Bradbury as part of the new series of Britains best walks. He’s managed to include several of his walkers in NWUK PURPLE in the footage too. His group have sponsored a section of a canal and look after it.

Nordic Walking UK really is one big friendly community. Instructors share hints and tips and provide support to each other and therefore our walkers. This is what belonging to NWUK really means – its UK wide and you can walk with all these fantastic instructors in places you’ve never been once you’ve your Freedom Passport through your Exercise-Anywhere account or search via the NWUK website. If you then activate your free 1 years membership of NWUK it opens up a host of other opportunities including 10% discount in the NWUK store, 15% in Cotswold Outdoors. other discounts in Rohan, Snow n Rock, Blacks, Naked Wines, cruises (Fred Olsen), holiday cottages, Saga and a host of other opportunities including discounts on all the NWUK festival tickets. You can even find Nordic Walking Holidays. There are also monthly competitions with great prizes. It’s really worth doing if you’ve not done it to date. Best of all you know you’re walking with instructors who are trained fitness instructors as well as holding the NWUK Nordic Walking diplomas. So whilst I’m on that topic… how about booking the festivals… and joining our first challenge event….

2018 NORDIC WALKING FESTIVALS. Registration is now open for the 2018 NWUK Walking Festivals in Purbeck, Dorset ( Sept 14-16th)  and Rustick Mini Festival (Tissington Hall in the Peak District (May 4-5th). Don’t delay. Hopefully you saw the email last week sent out both by NWUK and myself. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Have a look at the NWUK site event details.

Confirmed attendees for Purbeck in September are myself, Fiona, Miriam and Wynne. I have reserved enough accomodation for 5 people for a Thursday night to Monday stay. You need to do this asap if you are going as it is hard to find good value accomodation in Corfe (where the hub is) or Swanage already. Also if you book a festival ticket now it secures your place when they release the walk programme for booking. They let people book on to walks in the order they booked their festival ticket.

Saturday May 5th is looking the best day for most of us to go to Rustick and is the day I’ll be attending. Please let me know if you’ve booked a ticket. Wynne has booked her Saturday ticket already. If we get ourselves organised we can car share to save on travel costs.

Come and join us, the more the merrier. Both festivals are suitable for all abilities, levels of fitness and have lots of social events, workshops, challenge events and walks. Great fun! Can’t recommend them enough.

The NWUK Team will also be at the Keswick Mountain Festival on 9-11th June and Countryfile Live on 2-5th August. These are two great dates for your diary for meeting up, having fun and flying the purple NWUk flag.

The Stroke Association have confirmed that we can enter this event as Nordic Walkers. GREAT NEWS. I’ve already entered the 10k and my sister Alison who is our fastest Nordic Walker has entered the 15k but as a runner as she’s decided to run the Manchester Half Marathon later in the year (you won’t find me doing that… running that is). Tim Bowman the instructor from Stockport Nordic Walking has also confirmed that he’s entered the 10k too and has put the word out with his walkers.

We are not allowed to enter the 15k as Nordic Walkers as the First Aid cover stops at 1.30pm so you can choose from the 5k (3 miles) or 10k (6 miles) options. This challenge is achievable for any of you that can do the 3 mile walks I run on a Monday and Friday(5k) plus the longer 6 mile (10k)Sunday specials. The challenge is open to everyone even those who haven’t yet got their Freedom Passport. You even could just walk it if you don’t want to Nordic Walk it yet.

Here is the link to enter and please let me know once you’ve done so as I have to let the organisers know how many of us there are!!

NEW – GLOW HEALTHY EATING PLANS. Have a look at my website and on the left hand side there is a new section to have a look at. Sign up for a 28 day nutrition plan with healthy recipes sent to you via email everyday. THIS IS NOT A DIET… combined with Nordic Walking it will help you live a more healthy lifestyle which invariably will help with weight control. I’ve tried it and the recipes are really good and sensible too! Let me know if you sign up for the plan. Costs £1 a day for 28 days (£28 in total). Click on the link below then click on the orange Glow panel on the left hand side to find out more.

HELP REQUIRED to build our groups – If you can help me spread the word and get new members during 2018 that would be really appreciated. Is there someone you could encourage to come and learn, or could you display a poster somewhere where lots of people will see it? Or is there a group you belong to that may like to have a Taster session? If you follow me on Facebook could you share my posts/page with your friends? If you follow me on Twitter could you retweet my tweets?
