Susan Spain’s Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking News, Salford, Didsbury & Greater Manchester 27th March 2018

Hello and thanks for having a look at my newsletter.  Regular walks for NWUK Freedom Passport holders are half way down and Tasters/Learn to Nordic Walk course dates are shown at the bottom. It’s a long newsletter but you’ll soon get used to finding what you need.

Well the sun finally shone on us and we have managed to have some great walks over the last 7 days.

Thursday saw the first of my new easy pace ‘Stroller’ Walks and it was lovely to welcome Lucy and regular walker Jan on the walk. Currently the walk is at 10am but from Thursday 12th April it will move to an 10.30am start. The main location will be Clifton Country Park with an occasional alternative venue such as Monton Dukes Drive or the Bridgewater Canal to allow for a brew stop afterwards. As always new walk times take a while to take off so please come and support this walk if you can.

We had a brisk 4 mile walk on Friday with an extended route around the Worsley Looplines, Woods and Bridgewater Canal, necessary to walk off the pre walk lunch at the Waterside which was completed in the fastest time yet! It was also great to finally prise Helen away from her Media City lunchtime sessions to walk with us on her day off!

On Saturday, the weather held for our (now 10am) Early Bird Workout Walk during which Janette and Bridget finally received their Freedom Passports. We look forward to seeing you on many more walks soon. Geoff, Mary and Martina finally got their second Learn to Nordic Walk lesson and it was great to meet Richard and Anne who have come over from Yorkshire to attend a Fast Track Learn to Nordic Walk course with me.

I couldn’t have asked for better weather for Sunday’s Strawbury Duck Special to Entwistle and Wayoh Reservoirs where, despite losing an hours sleep a full complement of Nordic Walkers completed the 6 mile route bang on time.. (all planned of course) which meant we could walk straight into the Strawbury Duck for an excellent lunch. For those who know Clifton’s killer hill then this walk introduced one that will now forever be known as ‘the Ladder’ (thanks Fiona). The pub was ready for us and I hope you’ll agree that the food and service couldn’t have been better. Lots of pictures and videos on my Facebook page and some are attached to this email. I sent one of our pictures to Nordic Walking UK with a suitable (?) comment on Monday which has been featured on their Facebook page.

Then on Monday, the sunglasses were out again for a small but perfectly formed walk at Moses Gate Country Park.

Tuesday Didsbury Evening Strolls will return at 6pm every fortrnight from 1st May this will be from various locations in the Didsbury/Chorlton area.

Dates for the next Sunday specials are also listed as 15th April, 13th May, 17th June and 15th July. Subject to a successful reccie the 15th April walk will be  – Historic Houses to Scotsman’s Stump (Smithills Hall to Winter Hill – a strenuous (due to the climb) circa 8 mile, up hill (then thankfully down) walk to Winter Hill Mast, Bolton via the Smithills Estate and Barrow Bridge. Hopefully finishing with afternoon tea at Poppin’s at Smithills Hall. More details to follow in the next couple of weeks.  (Thank you to those who have offered to reccie this with me on Easter Monday as I’ll need all the eyes I can get for this one).

OUR FIRST CHALLENGE EVENT – THE STROKE ASSOCIATION’S RESOLUTION RUN EVENT (5K OR 10K ENTRY OPTIONS only for Nordic Walkers, £16 TO ENTER, MEDALS, T SHIRTS ETC, walk, run or jog).  The weather forced the postponement of this event which will now take place on Sunday 29th April. Hopefully the weather will be much better at the end of April so why not take the opportunity and sign up again as they’ve reopened the registration portal. Sian the event organiser rang me last week as she was hoping to get some shots of the 11 Nordic Walkers for PR purposes so if we can ensure there are even more of us then it will make great publicity both for them and our wonderful exercise!

I’ve now put full details on my website so here is the link to find out more. Please let me know if you decide to enter as I have to let the organisers know how many of us there are!!

To contribute further, my sister Alison & I have set up a Just Giving page to raise funds in memory of our mother, Beryl as unfortunately our family has had too many experiences of stroke. If you’d like to donate then the link to our page is here. Thank you in advance from both of us. To date we’ve raised over £500. Alison will now be running her half marathon at Chester on the 29th April instead of the Heaton Park event as the dates now clash for her.

Registration is now open for the 2018 NWUK Walking Festivals in Purbeck, Dorset ( Sept 14-16th)  and Rustick Mini Festival (Tissington Hall in the Peak District (May 4-5th). Don’t delay. Have a look at the NWUK site event details. Also if you book a festival ticket now it secures your place when they release the walk programme for booking. They let people book on to walks in the order they booked their festival ticket. ie – you’re in a queue!!

RUSTICK is booking up so if you’re thinking of going then book your ticket asap. Saturday May 5th is looking the best day for most of us to go to Rustick and is the day I’ll be attending. Please let me know if you’ve booked a ticket. Wynne and Carolyn have booked their Saturday tickets already and Alan is going on the Friday. If we get ourselves organised we can car share to save on travel costs.

Confirmed attendees for Purbeck in September are myself, Fiona, Miriam and Wynne. I have reserved enough accomodation for 5 people for a Thursday night to Monday stay. You need to do this asap if you are going as it is hard to find good value accomodation in Corfe (where the hub is) or Swanage already.

Come and join us, the more the merrier. Both festivals are suitable for all abilities, levels of fitness and have lots of social events, workshops, challenge events and walks. Great fun! Can’t recommend them enough.

The NWUK Team will also be at the Keswick Mountain Festival on 9-11th June and Countryfile Live on 2-5th August. These are two great dates for your diary for meeting up, having fun and flying the purple NWUK flag.

REGULAR Walks coming up for NWUK Freedom Passport holders

If you’ve got suggestions for new walks and venues then please let me know and if you’d like to be a reccie buddy with me or one of my new walk leaders so we can add more walks to the programme that would be great and really welcome. They don’t all have to be long walks. Please contact me if you’ve free on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday to be my reccie buddy. Find out what goes into planning each walk.

POLE HIRE AND REGULAR WALK CANCELLATION POLICY. Please note that once you have your Freedom Passport if you want to continue to use my poles rather than buy your own there is a £1 hire charge, payable in cash on the day.

Also please note the cancellation policy for Regular Walks. You can cancel online by removing yourself from the walk up to 24 hours before a walk starts after which no refund is allowed. If you need to cancel nearer to the start time then please just send me a text or ring me so we’re not waiting for you but no refund will be given.

BOOKING LAST MINUTE ONTO WALKS – Remember you can book onto a walk yourself up to 30 minutes before it starts (text me to let me know you’re coming too and to check the walk is going ahead) or if really last minute, ring or text me and let me know you’re coming (and to check the walk is still going ahead) and providing you’ve got a credit balance to cover the cost of the walk on your Exercise- Anywhere account then I can add you myself to the walk after the event and take the payment from your account …. this is a last resort though!

PAYMENT PACKAGES – Freedom Passport holders can either pay as you go or you can change your payment package on your Exercise-Anywhere account page to ‘Top up £25/£50 or £100 and save 20% per walk’. You must change your package, not just add £25 to your account to get the discount. In effect this brings the cost of a £6.50 walk down to £5.20.

NEW £20 MONTHLY DIRECT DEBIT PAYMENT OPTION. By signing up to this option Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking Freedom Passport holders will be able to come on any of my regular Adventure or Workout walks each month (excluding no discount Sunday specials or other special event no discount walks) for a one off payment of £20. There is a minimum sign up of 3 months to the DD option then operates on a monthly rolling basis. There is a 14 day cancellation notice period after sign up. Full terms and conditions will be shown when you sign up for this option. If you walk with me 4 or more times a month then it will work out cheaper than the 20% off Prepayment option. This Direct Debit option also gives you 20% off the price of walks with other NWUK instructors. If you choose to sign up to the DD option and are already on a 20% off prepayment option then you can contact NWUK directly to arrange a refund of any outstanding balance once you’ve signed up. If you’ve any other queries then please give me a ring. All payment options can be viewed via this link.
