Susan Spain’s Parks and Pathways Nordic Walking News, Salford, Manchester & Didsbury 30th Jan 2018

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my Newsletter! Did you see the fantastic Nordic Walking features on the One Show and on Britain’s favourite 100 walks? That was NWUK instructor Ian and his gang from Mercian Nordic Walking in Bromsgrove. Fun, friendship and fitness rolled into one.

LAST 7 DAYS WALK NEWS.  Walks over the last 7 days (and mostly not getting wet) included the Heaton Park Adventure Walk last Friday with the pre walk lunch at The Atrium Cafe (Garden Centre) in bright sunshine. Just under 3 miles walked in a brisk hour with many hill inclines thrown in. The views across Manchester from the Observatory point were really clear including across to Blackstone Edge and Peel Tower.

Monday’s Adventure Walk was really more of a Workout Walk at Fog Lane Park. Well done to Dee, Shelagh and Judith who really got stuck into the Smovey workout and all the other drills, exercises and games I threw at them.

Saturday’s Early Bird Workout Walk focussed initially on hill climb reps at Clifton’s ‘killer hill’ and then higher gear walking to build cardio and upper body fitness. We also discussed ‘pole safety and etiquette’ on walks.. unfortunately as the picture attached shows they didn’t take it too seriously…!! Afterwards, Miriam and Fiona then went off to reccie a potential longer walk of 4-5 miles from Clifton CP to Phillips Park and back. This will be added to the programme later in the year.

Last Thursday at MediaCity, we had a fast paced 45 minute Workout Walk around the Quays varying the speed and intensity across different hard surfaces, bridges and inclines.

Ian and Keith are gamely getting to grips with the technique on their Didsbury LTNW sessions and are now half way through their course and the Saturday LTNW group will finish their induction course this weekend with their ‘graduation walk’ at 10.30am at Clifton.

If you’ve friends who’d like to Learn to Nordic Walk or you’ve not yet signed up to a course then there are lots of dates coming up in February (have a look at the dates at the bottom of this article) Please help grow our group.
